Awnings: A Proper Understanding Prolongs their Lifespan

All you need is some basic information to keep your awnings looking their best.

Vinyl and Canvas

There are two basic types of awnings: vinyl awnings and canvas awnings. (Fiberglass is another type but it is not as common as vinyl and canvas.) Understanding each material’s needs is necessary for maintaining your awning’s lifespan.

Canvas

Canvas awnings are made with a polypropylene or acrylic fiber. They are strong and hold up well to UV exposure. The average lifespan of a well-maintained canvas awning is 8-10 years.

Vinyl

Vinyl awnings are made of a polyester fiber mesh coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Vinyl awnings aren’t as resilient as canvas awnings, with only a lifespan of 5-7 years. If vinyl awnings are backlit, take extra care when cleaning them. Extra pigments sit on top of the awning, making it look especially rich when backlit. You’ll want to consult an awning specialist before having it cleaned.

Clean Regularly

It is important to regularly clean your awnings. The sun fades an awning’s color over time, bleaching the clean areas of the canvas or vinyl more quickly than the dirty areas. If you’ve neglected your awnings and then clean them, they may look striped. The awning’s pigments are uneven because dirt “protects” parts of your awning from the sun.

Clean your awnings at least twice a year. Clean them more often if they are exposed to pollutants. Awnings located near the exhaust fumes of heavy traffic may need to be cleaned quarterly.

How to Clean

Hire a professional company to clean your awnings. An experienced professional will clean your awnings without damaging them in the process. They should use an industry-approved cleaner and a low-pressure system for rinsing the awning. Harsh chemicals and pressure over 200 PSI will damage the fibers of the vinyl or canvas.
