Awning Upkeep Tips

Posted on Aug 16, 2022

A Big Investment

Your awnings were no small investment. Fortunately, the comfort and style they lend your property is paying off. But do you maintain this asset? Learn how to preserve your awnings and keep them looking their best year after year.

Awnings’ Enemies

Your awnings’ biggest enemies are the elements. The UV rays of the sun, the dirt in pollutants, as well as the acid in bird droppings all bleach and break down fabric over time. Additionally, the run-off from aluminum and dryvit creates horizontal stains on your awnings. The longer dirt, pollutants, and other elements sit on your awnings, the greater the chance the vinyl or canvas will deteriorate.

Maintain Its Lifespan

Awnings last seven to eight years when they are well maintained. Keep in mind the following tips when caring for your awnings:

  • Clean your awnings at least twice a year. Clean more often if they are exposed to a lot of dirt, pollutants, etc.

  • Never clean your awnings using pressure.

  • Seal your vinyl awnings. (Still maintain your regular cleanings in addition to using the sealant.)

  • Watch for mold on your canvas awnings. Canvas is especially vulnerable to molds since its layers of fabric retain moisture.
