What is tempered glass?

Tempered glass is simply glass that is a lot stronger and safer than its non-tempered alternatives. This glass is rapidly cooled after reaching its melting point, making it four times stronger than other glasses. Break this glass and it crumbles into tiny pieces instead of splitting into large, dangerous shards.

Do I have tempered glass?

Most likely. Tempered glass is widely used in both homes and businesses because of its superior safety and durability. You will find it in office buildings, skylights, sunrooms, windows above a tub and next to doors, and many more places both inside and outside the home. To spot tempered glass, try gently running something thin (like a credit card) along the surface of the glass. In some cases you will be able to “hear” the gritty surface hitting the card. This is the layer of microscopic pieces of dust and debris that fused to the surface of the glass as it was cooling. For some tempered glass you won’t be able to “hear” this grit because it is so fine. Instead, look for a stamp on the corner of the window that says it is tempered.

How should I clean my tempered glass?

It is very easy to scratch the fused surface of fine dust on your tempered glass. Cleaning it with a scraper or any abrasive material will etch this microscopic layer of debris. Your glass will end up looking scratched to the naked-eye. Safely clean your tempered glass by gently sponging its surface with soap and water and then dry it with a soft towel.
